Dallas Counseling for Infidelity Recovery
Discovering a spouse or partner’s infidelity can be an extremely traumatic experience and often takes years for the couple to recover. However, it is important to know that many many couples do recover and actually develop a stronger relationship after infidelity occurs. There are several influencing factors on whether or not your relationship will be one of those that survives infidelity: the quality of the relationship before infidelity, each partner’s level of commitment to making the relationship work, effective communication skills, and the level of external support available. Several hard topics will have to be examined during the process of recovering from infidelity: what were the contributing relationship factors before the affair which made the environment ripe for the infidelity to occur; what needs to change in the relationship for things to be healthy and satisfying for both people; what is each partner willing to do to rebuild trust in the relationship; is there a willingness to forgive; challenging personal integrity; and discussions about value systems. Counseling after infidelity is likely to last a year or more. Every couple is different, but the initial phases of treatment are primarily focused on dealing with the effects of the trauma, not doing further damage to the relationship, and creating an environment of transparency.
