Write a Friend

Write a Friend

In our fast-paced digital world, handwritten letters and cards have been almost entirely replaced by texts and emails. On the one hand, digital communication allows us to keep in regular, easy contact; on the other, there is nothing quite like getting a surprise, handwritten letter in our mailbox from a loved one. They carry the warmth of personal effort, showcasing the time and thought put into crafting a message. Unlike the fleeting nature of digital communication, letters become tangible keepsakes, preserving memories and emotions for years to come.

December is National Write a Friend Month, so here are some ideas for celebrating the merits of an old-fashioned card or letter:

– Keep a box at home with paper, envelopes, cute/inspirational greeting cards, postcards purchased on vacation and maybe some interesting articles that you came across that might mean something to a loved on. You’re much more likely to dash off a quick note if you have the supplies already on hand. Don’t forget the stamps!

– Many people still read newspapers or magazines in print. Think of how nice it would be to send or receive a clipped out article with words written across the top such as, “Thought of you,” or, “We just talked about this” in the mail!

– If you have or work with children, have them write a cheery note to a local nursing home or children’s hospital. They might just make someone’s day, especially if the recipient(s) cannot be at home or with loved ones for the holidays. This is a wonderful project for teachers to do with their students.

– While a thank you call or email is nice, a handwritten version hits differently. These are the ones that might very well end up in a special mementos box. Teach children the importance of writing thank you notes, too (Bonus: they can practice their handwriting skills).

– Did you know you can write a letter to your favorite Disney character and receive an autographed picture in return? It takes about 4-6 weeks, but what a fun reason to write a letter! The mailing address is:

Walt Disney World Communications

P.O. Box 10040
Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830-0040

(Great for kids of ALL ages!)

– Keep in mind that while this time of year can be joyful and filled with celebrations, it can also be a time of loneliness and sadness for many people. Look around and see who might be cheered up with a lovely, handwritten note from you.

Wishing you warm connections and heartfelt letters.
